MELSEC iQ-F is Mitsubishi Electric's compact PLC series for everything from stand-alone machines to more complex systems. The series has built-in Ethernet and flash program memory with no battery to maintain, and the FX5U, FX5UC and FX5UJ also have a built-in SD card slot (the FX5S uses the optional FX5-SDCD). Programmed with GX Works3, it includes the FX5U, FX5UC, FX5UJ and FX5S CPU models.

Key features of the MELSEC iQ-F compact PLC

• Built-in Ethernet (100/10 Mbps, 8 connections): supports SLMP, socket communication, MODBUS/TCP, FTP, Web server, SNTP and a CC-Link IE Field Network Basic master. It also supports MELSOFT and VPN remote maintenance.
• GX Works3 programming: ladder, ST, FBD/LD and SFC, with function blocks and labels (IEC 61131-3). One engineering tool covers all CPU models.
• No battery, easy backup: flash program memory needs no battery. An SD/SDHC card (up to 16 GB) handles data logging, memory dump, backup/restore and firmware update. It is built in on the FX5U, FX5UC and FX5UJ, and the FX5S needs the optional FX5-SDCD.
• Built-in security: security key, IP filter, and file and remote passwords. The Web server includes a diagnostics page.
• Expandable for your machine: options include analog, temperature control, high-speed counter, positioning, simple motion (SSCNET III/H) and motion (CC-Link IE TSN) modules. Safety extension modules are also available (modules only, not the CPUs).
• Network options: CC-Link IE TSN, CC-Link IE Field, CC-Link, EtherNet/IP (via FX5-EIP), AnyWireASLINK, PROFIBUS-DP, BACnet/IP, MQTT and OPC UA.

Choosing a model: FX5U, FX5UC, FX5UJ or FX5S

• FX5U (flagship): 32/64/80 CPU I/O points and 64k/128k program steps. Power is AC 100–240 V or DC 24 V. It has built-in RS-485 (MODBUS RTU), built-in analog (2 channels in, 1 channel out), 4-axis positioning at 200 kpps (MT models only) and up to 8 high-speed counter channels at 200 kHz. LD instruction time is 34 ns at 64k steps.
• FX5UC (compact body): 32/64/96 I/O points, DC 24 V only, in connector or spring-clamp terminal types. It has 64k/128k steps, RS-485, 4-axis positioning at 200 kpps and 8 high-speed counter channels at 200 kHz. It has no built-in analog.
• FX5UJ (cost-effective): 24/40/60 I/O points, 48k steps, Ethernet, USB and an SD slot. It has 3-axis positioning at 200 kpps and high-speed counters of 4 channels at 100 kHz plus 4 channels at 10 kHz. It has no RS-485 and supports up to 8 extension modules.
• FX5S (simple, IoT-ready): 30/40/60/80 I/O points and 48k steps, with Ethernet and USB. It has 4-axis positioning at 100 kpps and high-speed counters of 4 channels at 100 kHz plus 4 channels at 10 kHz. It has no RS-485 and no extension modules, and uses adapters and one board for expansion.
